Applicants rushed to the drama room at the beginning of the week, all in high anticipation of the cast list being posted. A total of twenty-nine students gasped with delight to see their names matched with characters for the upcoming spring musical. Combining Mrs. Kemp’s dramatics and Mr. Locker’s stupendous singing skills, the performing arts department is set and ready to go bring Allatoona yet another crowd-pleasing entertainer. The classic start of once upon a time takes a turn and is spun into a delightful version of the fairytale of The Princess and the Pea. This masterpiece musical goes by the title of Once Upon a Mattress and is sure to bring lots of laughs and life to the audience. Director and drama teacher Mrs. Kemp describes the musical as, “cute- It’s perfect for our opening musical.” First on the agenda for rehearsals is to block out all the dancing and actors positions. The cast will rehearse almost every day after school and plan to practice choreography on Saturdays. The actors will be held to academic standards of excellence during rehearsals and up until the shows this April 22, 23 and 24th. Once Upon a Mattress will premier with only one show a night and two shows the 24th. Times will be known closer to opening night. “We’re really looking forward to getting started,” says Mrs. Kemp with a smile, “It’s going to be a blast.” With such a promising talent and an outgoing cast, Once Upon a Mattress guarantees to treat Allatoona to a show that’s royally riveting and excitement for all.
