Taylor Swift swept the stage after taking all four categories she was nominated for at the 2009 Country Music Awards including Album of the Year, Vocalist of the Year, Music Video of the Year, and most importantly Entertainer of the Year. Swift beat out major names in country including Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, George Strait and Brad Paisley in competing for Entertainer of the Year.
Many country music fans feel that her Entertainer of the Year award was “too much, too soon.” At nineteen years old, Taylor has only been in the music world for a couple of years compared to Chesney, Urban, and Paisley who have had years of touring and performing around the country. Swift was the youngest person to win this award in CMA history as she accepted her award from her idols Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. As they announced her name, Kenny Chesney, who held the award for the previous three years, hugged her in congratulations. In her acceptance speech, she said teary eyed, “I’ll never forget this moment because in this moment, everything I have ever wanted has just happened to me.”
Perhaps most of all, viewers were discontent with Swift winning Female Vocalist of the Year. Her voice can simply not compare to singers such as Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert, but she somehow took the award. Taylor performed twice at the CMA’s and while fans love her songs, her lack of tone was evident. Her win was most likely associated with her large fan-base from both the Country and Pop genre. However, no one can deny she was a winner that night.
Although many did not agree with these wins, all fans showed respect throughout the show. In one of Taylor’s acceptance speeches, she made a jab at Kanye West. She thanked the security around the stage in reference to what happened at the VMA’s when Kanye interrupted her acceptance speech. Even Little Jimmy Dickens at eighty-six years old played a prank by running up on stage at the CMA’s and proclaiming Taylor to have the best video of all time.
Other winners of the night included Darius Rucker as New Artist of the Year, Lady Antebellum as Best Vocal Group and Best Single of the Year, Brad Paisley with Male Vocalist and Musical Event of the Year, and Sugarland with their third consecutive Vocal Duo of the Year. The Country Music Awards had a very exciting night and congratulations to all the winners.
