Many people spend the day after Christmas or the winter holidays hitting the malls for those after Christmas sales, returning unwanted gifts, or cleaning up and putting away the aftermath of the holiday season. Even more people have never heard of Boxing Day, a little known holiday celebrated in Brittan, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia on December 26. No, Boxing Day doesn’t involve large men beating each other with overstuffed gloves or hauling away discarded gift boxes; yet, Boxing Day’s origins are obscure. The first boxing was probably celebrated in Brittan during the middle ages and it is often referred to as St. Stephen’s day or the Fest of Saint Steven. However, the most famous association with Boxing Day is the theme of charity and or rewarding employees or assistants for their hard work. During the middle ages, peasants would line up carrying boxes to the front door of their lord or employers house to receive small gifts, money, or their yearly supply of necessities. Today, in Brittan and Australia, Boxing Day is celebrated with special church services, yacht races, gift giving between employers and workers, local festivals and feasts, and even the annual dip in the icy English Channel by the Brighton Swimming Club. Although Boxing Day is not widely (or rather not at all) observed in the United States, this shouldn’t stop you from taking part in a fun new holiday. Try spending this day hitting the after holiday sales, having a small family dinner, or celebrate the most important part of Boxing Day: Charity. There a plenty of ways to do this such as helping out around your community or serving dinner to less fortunate families. So whether you spend your day helping out at a homeless shelter or simply remembering and rewarding the people who have helped and assisted you throughout the year, what better way is there to celebrate a new and different holiday?
