Every New Year brings the hope and anticipation for what the New Year may bring. For several the New Year is a new beginning; out with the old, in with the new. Many begin their New Year with the infamous New Years’ Resolution, a promise numerous people will not keep or accomplish. The commitments range from losing weight, stopping smoking, getting out of debt, or simply being happier. Exactly how often are these well intentioned promises kept?

Recent research confirms that most of the resolutions made will not be accomplished. A little over half, 52%, of the people, who make these resolutions believe they would meet their goal, while only 12% actually do. A recent study showed that women are 10% more likely to achieve their intention if they make ambitions public and enlist help from friends and family. Men are 22% more likely to achieve their aspiration if they set small, measurable goals.

There are ten New Years’ Resolutions that are commonly made each year. What are they? One is to be more organized in one’s life. Making a new partnership, business or social, is an additional common one. Two resolutions that are made by countless people are to save money and reduce debt. Another one is to get a new and better job than the one a person has now. Stopping bad habits such as smoking and drinking excessively can also be found commonly on the long list of resolutions. A resolution that is often made is to finally get down to one’s desired size. The last two and very important resolutions are to enjoy life more and spend more time with friends and family. To everyone who made a New Years’ Resolution, good luck!
