If you have been to the movies lately, you may have noticed a movie or two that are shown in digital 3D. It seems that more people are jumping onto the 3D bandwagon, as Avatar proved. It became the second highest grossing movie of all time, and companies have noticed the impact the technology has had on audiences. The success of 3D movies has paved the way for companies such a Panasonic, Sony, and LG Electronics to create TVs with the ability to present shows in 3D. These TVs will be available in early 2011, but major broadcasting networks have started the transition to 3D. Recently ESPN announced plans to add a new channel to their lineup on June 11, which will present all their shows in 3D. ESPN 3D will debut with a broadcast of the soccer championship FIFA World Cup match between South Africa and Mexico. About 85 sporting events are scheduled to be filmed in 3D format. These events include basketball championships in January 2011, the X Games, and college football. Discovery Communication which owns the Discovery channels and twelve other channels announced that they would also jump on the 3D bandwagon.  They will debut a 3D channel which will be teamed up with Sony Entertainment and IMAX to show movies, nature programs and more. Some of the shows that are shown on the channels by Discovery will be converted in 3D as well.

DirecTV will be the first cable provider to include these new 3D channels as well as their own in a package. So how exactly will TV audiences be able to watch these channels? People will either have to fork over money for a 3D television or upgrade their current HDTV with software that will support the 3D HDTV.

The success of these channels all depends on how many people will want to spend money on converting to 3D. It is a whole different experience from seeing 3D movies to seeing shows. 3D glasses are irritating enough after two hours; imagine having to wear them every time to watch television. At the same time, it is an expensive transition and we are in a time where the majority of the people would rather stick to watching television like we have been for the past sixty years.
