From the copper and lead ore that ancients Egyptians used to create the first makeup products, to the new scientifically created cosmetics that can outsmart Mother Nature. Pores, freckles, blemishes, and eyes can all be altered with a little help from makeup. Makeup has been part of humankind for thousands of years. Over the centuries women have used all sorts of techniques to enhance their physical features and natural beauty. Dating back to thousands of years ago, women have used burnt matches to darken their eyes, berries to stain their lips, and young boy’s urine to hide away freckles. Some were even misguided in thinking that drinking ox’s blood would improve their complexion. Women have dangerously put their lives at risk with homemade cosmetics just to gain any sort of appeal. Today, the ingredients are only slightly less bizarre, and many women are unaware of them. Here are eight weird items you may not have known about cosmetics.
1. Table Salt: Did you know that good old fashioned table salt is one of the ingredients in your shampoo, facial cleaners, body wash, bubbles baths, and anything that foams. These products require special surface-active agents which require salt. So next time your enjoying your shower time, take a second to look on the back of your bath products and see if table salt is in the mix.
2. Pepper Spray: If you are a police officer, you are probably very familiar with pepper spray. Pepper spray can bring severe pain to your eyes when in contact. But would you ever think that pepper spray would be in your lipstick? The ingredient in lipstick is called Oleoresin Capsicum and in any product causes a warming sensation, and is also in any over-the-counter pain and itch creams.
3. Diatomaceous Earth (ingredient in dynamite): Diatomaceous is one of the two ingredients in dynamite. It is powder based and derives from fossilized remains of hard shelled algae. They are very porous and even used in cat litter and water filters. In cosmetics, toothpaste, deodorant, absorbent powders, and cuticle creams all have this dynamite ingredient.
4. Albumen (egg whites): Egg whites are the perfect ingredient for skin firming reasons. Egg whites are dried and used in skin tightening products. So next time you think of using the cucumber peel off mask, try using the eggs left in your pan from this morning.
5. Plastics: Plastics serve a major role in hair products and waterproof cosmetics. Plastics keep that perfect set look for the entire day. Waterproof mascaras, eyeliners and other cosmetics all consist of plastics.
6. Urea (extracted from urine): In cosmetics, urea is a common skin softener and humectants, which means to hold moisture in the skin. Urea is also found in household cleaners and hair products.
7. Propylene Glycol (not antifreeze): Propylene Glycol is commonly mistaken for the lethal ethylene glycol. It is used to moisturize the skin and hair and is a primary ingredient in self warming products. Propylene Glycol is also used on the wings of aircrafts to prevent ice crystals for accumulating and excess moisture.
8. Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil: This is exactly the thing you buy in twenty pound barrels for the food industry. Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil is the best thing to use as an amazing skin softener, emollient, and barrier ingredient. You can find it in almost any foot cream, lip balms, and suntan products. Although the trans fat content is a reason to avoid eating it, it actually improves the performance of the cosmetics product.
So next time you go out on a shopping spree for beauty products and cosmetics be wary of the ingredients that are involved in making your picture perfect face.
