Each year 2,600 people die and 330,000 are injured. What are the causes of these deaths and injuries? Texting and driving. In the past year texting while driving has become a major issue and is causing more accidents than ever. Not only does it mentally distract the driver, but it also physically distracts them. Texting requires the driver to use at least one hand leaving only the other to control the car safely. The driver also risks losing control of the car by taking their eyes off of the road to read or respond to a text message. Although driving and texting puts the driver in great danger it also puts the other drivers on the road at risk. Concerned parents everywhere are taking a stand against texting and driving to protect their children and other drivers. The Great Hang Up is a pledge for drivers to take promises to keep the roads safe by choosing to be against texting and driving. 11 Alive News is providing a printable copy of the pledge to keep as a reminder in your home or car. There is a very important line at the end of this pledge. That line is for the driver’s signature to insure that texting and driving is something that will no longer occur in their car. The grieving parents of Victoria Heil learned how dangerous texting and driving can be the hard way. They lost their eighteen year old daughter just days after celebrating Christmas in 2008. They are now speaking out about the dangers of texting and driving in hopes of saving a life. They have both decided to take the pledge. If you would like to join The Great Hang Up and pledge against texting and driving print out your copy at www.11alive.com.
