On October 5th and 6th, eight students represented Allatoona High School at the Georgia Tech Model United Nations Conference. Model UN is a simulation of the actual United Nations. Students who participate in these conferences research information about an assigned country and write position papers based on real live problems that are assigned by the universities where they are attending the conference at. Students are also divided into committees based on their countries’ representation in the real U.N. Model UN allows students to learn about other cultural viewpoints. Each day lasts eight hours, with a one hour lunch break. All Model UN delegates had a wide variety of restaurants to choose from on the Georgia Tech Campus. Even though they didn’t have much time to explore much of the university grounds, delegates still enjoyed their experience. Lauren Gourley, the president of Model UN had this to say about their conference: “Overall, everyone performed really well at Tech. I was proud of the few new people we have and really pleased with our returning members’ performance. We are looking forward to our next conference at Georgia State.” Genevieve DeVille (a sophomore member) talks about her experience and says, “The Georgia Tech Model UN was the most competitive conference that I have been to. It is so much fun to meet and interact with new people from other high schools, and coming up with world resolutions is very exciting.” Model UN members are now looking forward to their next conference in November at Georgia State University. We wish them all the best as they represent Allatoona High School.
