This past week at the Allatoona Athletic Program’s assembly, a very well known speaker was invited to help share some inspiration. This speaker was Jonathon Dwyer, the star running back at Georgia Tech. Dwyer is a Junior at GT and is ranked eighth in the nation and came from Kell High school. After speaking to Jonathon, Junior Patrick Davis was said, “I thought it was a very cool and inspiring experience to meet him.”

The Athletic Leadership program allows an experience for high school students who not only excel in the athletic field but also in the academic areas. To be in the Leadership program you are required to keep at least a 3.5 GPA and be known for your honorable character. When Junior Sabrina Paige was asked about why she thinks her coaches had chosen her, she said, “I think I was selected because my coaches realize that I am always putting my best effort forward and getting every little bit back.”

The main purpose of this group is to serve as an outreach program to the community and also focuses on the feeder school to Allatoona, Pickett’s Mill Elementary. Junior Kelsey Glass said, “I enjoy going to recess at Pickett’s Mill, and interacting with the younger children and knowing that I am making a difference in their lives.” The athletes are not only reading, playing and talking to the children but they are also acting as role models and setting a good example for the future generations.

During the assemblies the school provides a free breakfast for the participants which includes: a Chick-fil-a biscuit and a bottled water. When asked about his breakfast Junior Jacob Wilson said, “I had expected to get some orange juice as well, sadly I was let down.” Even though the breakfast was free obviously it wasn’t enough to please Jacob.

This program takes advantage of old friendships and connections from coaches and administration to get inspiring speakers such as Dwyer. Coach Morrel, has a background with Dwyer, when he coached at Kell high school during his sophomore and junior years and has kept in touch ever since. Now as a football player at Georgia Tech, Dwyer has a much higher reputation , but still manages to keep a humble and level-headed personality.
