The excitement among the girls on the Allatoona lacrosse team begins to build as they proudly adorn the red and white uniforms and secure their goggles into place. These brave Buccaneers grab their trusty lacrosse sticks and head out with visions of victory dancing in their heads. Sophomore player, Sarah Reisig, describes the best satisfaction in the sport occurs, “When we step on the field for the first time and the game begins to start- the whistle blows and the next hour and a half is completely in the hands of your team.” This exhilaration is tangible out on the field for every player as each feels the rush of adrenaline pulsing through their veins. For a program that was started only last year, the girl’s lacrosse team did a remarkable job at jumping right in and competing with all the established teams in the region. With so many new ladies to this fast-spreading sport, head girls lacrosse Coach Julie Speeney notes that a significant part of the year was spent on, “learning the game and being able to make adjustments.” Despite the time spent on building the basics, “Our defensive system learned a pretty tough defensive system and did well,” remarks Coach Speeney, “We had some speed in the midfield and our attacks improved in scoring.” With thirteen returning players this current season and a total of twenty-seven girls on the team, the Bucs are back and ready to get into action. They plan to improve their defense to accomplish keeping opponent’s goals to a minimum. “We want to increase the amount of players that score and improve on our passing,” states Coach Speeney. Allatoona’s girls lacrosse team also embodies another essential quality- chemistry between players. “We all get along well and we’re all close,” says Sarah Reisig as Coach Speeney adds that, “The girls enjoy the pace of the game and working together as a team. They are very supportive of each other.” All this incredible chemistry and companionship is helped by the fact that these dedicated players practice four or five times a week for an average of an hour and forty-five minutes. Games provide a prime opportunity for the girls to put their skills to the test and will be held mostly on Mondays and Wednesdays. When asked about this 2010 team, Coach Speeney replies, “I am very excited about the upcoming season. We have a lot of new girls this year and I have enjoyed watching their excitement as well as how the returning players have stepped up to help them learn the skills and about the game.” As these students consistently strengthen their ball control, defense tactics, speed and agility, they become stronger and scarier competitors with each day. Our buccaneers just won’t settle until they’ve reached the top.
