On December 18, 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar made its way onto the silver screen.  The story of the nine-foot blue Na’vi natives did in fact live up to the hype that was created by the media. It made $73 million on the first weekend and later earned a whopping $1.3 billion worldwide. It was instantly a box office hit and was named also the second largest grossing film after Cameron’s Titanic. But it was not Avatar’s story that caught the crowd’s attention; it was the spectacular and unique special effects that brought the movie to life. The movie was shown in 3-D at the IMAX theatres across the country, and was also played in 3-D and 2-D in other theatres worldwide. The whole world was dazzled by the cinematographer’s talent.

Once the 3-D glasses were on, the crowd was transported into the mysterious world of the Avatars. The imaginary planet of Pandora seemed too realistic to be true due to the 3- D effects that showed its floating mountains and one of a kind wildlife. It almost felt as if you were flying with the featured dragons in the air. Mauro Fiore, the film’s talented cinematographer, did and excellent job of blending the reality and the imaginary in this epic science fiction. Such words as “glorious” and “extraordinary” surrounded the movie from magazine such as New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and The New Yorker. They all praised the movie by saying that it had the some of the greatest special effects that were ever used in a 3-D film. It also snagged four nominations for the Golden Globes for “Best Motion Picture, Drama.” Many movies before Avatar have been shown in 3-D, but they have never been used in the way that the worldwide blockbuster was used. But after the success of Avatar, movie companies will be pushing even harder to premiere their films in 3-D as well. Soon, all movies will be shown only 3-D because Avatar proved what an impact extreme special effects can have on a movie.
