With the terrible earthquake that occurred on January 12, hundreds of thousands of Haitians were left homeless, displaced, injured, or dead. The rest of the world was left to wonder how they could help. With large charities like the Red Cross, and Habitat for Humanity, you might wonder what one single insignificant person could do.
Charlie Simpson, a seven year old from London, was in the same position and decided to team up with UNICEF, and create an on-line donation webpage.
This simple plea was heard around the world, “My name is Charlie Simpson. I want to do a sponsored bike ride for Haiti because there was a big earthquake and loads of people have lost their lives.” With these simple words, the website that was originally intended to raise a mere ₤500 has now raised more than ₤100,000. That is about $161,000. Simpson completed his five mile bike ride around a local park, and UNICEF has already collected the donations and is in the process of putting them to good use. They are helping with the reconstruction effort as well as the distribution of goods such as food and water. This just goes to show how one seemingly unimportant child can help to make the world a better place. Could you imagine what could be accomplished if everyone was willing to lend a helping hand? Simpson certainly did.
