Teen drivers are extremely guilty of texting and driving. After we get our license, we think we own the road. We believe driving becomes second nature so we become less focused. Then the phone in the cup holder lights up. Suddenly, the world around us must come to a stop. It won’t matter if we swerve into oncoming traffic a little, or if we slow down a lot in order to respond; we just have to send that text.
Texting while driving has proven to be almost as dangerous as drunk driving. With how popular texting has become, this poses a huge threat for driving on the roads today. By texting and driving, you are not only putting your life in danger, but everyone else’s life around you as well. Accidents can happen to anyone. According to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, if you are texting while driving, you are 2.8 times more likely to get into an accident. Is sending one text more important than a life?
The UK recently introduced a texting while driving PSA. The four minute video is extremely graphic. Some say it goes too far, but it certainly gets the point across. The video shows a teenage girl driving while texting with her friends in the car. They get into a head on collision killing numerous people, including innocent parents with children in the back seat. This extremely violent video was posted to make one point loud and clear: don’t text and drive.
In the U.S., eighteen states have banned texting while driving. Some drivers choose to ignore the law and continue putting their life at risk. The number of deaths from texting and driving related accidents raises everyday. Distracted drivers are dangerous drivers and gambling your and other’s safety away for one message is not worth it. So put your phone on silent and wait; it could just save a life.
