From marriages to scandals and from politics to history, 2009 has been a good year to raise the some eyebrows. We can all admit that jaw dropping news is the one that interests us the most. We love the affairs, divorces, and controversies that cause turmoil amongst the famous. Let’s begin 2009 with an event that made history: the inauguration of our first African-American president, Barack Obama. The year 2009 started out making history in politics on January 20. And let’s not forget the eccentric political battle between Obama, Palin, and McCain. Sarah Palin contributed to a lot of the gossip cumulated in 2009, when it was leaked to the media that her teenage daughter, Bristol Palin, was pregnant. This heated battle kept America waiting on the edge of their seats and their eyes glued to the television.

Getting closer to February, Nadia Suleman made big headlines when she gave birth to octuplets, adding to her six previous kids at home. This gives her a grand total of fourteen children! The famous couple, Jon and Kate Gosselin, is also known for their numerous kids on TLC. Trouble hit the family when Jon was caught cheating with Kate’s surgeon’s daughter!  Fans heard the bad news when Kate announced on her show that they are in fact getting a divorce.

On April 11, Susan Boyle took the stage for Britain’s Got Talent, and sent shock waves throughout the world. She is the biggest sensation on YouTube and has now recorded her first debut album. Who knew that her voice could be so remarkable? 2009 was the year when America went gaga over Lady Gaga. Her bizarre outfits, elaborate makeup, and unique performances are all part of the package deal which makes fans go crazy for her. Many of her songs have sky rocketed to the top of the charts, including: “Just Dance”, “Poker face”, and “Paparazzi.”  Lady Gaga is a one woman show who can do it all.

“America will have a black president when pigs learn to fly.”  This expression was used by many people throughout the US.  How ironic, when Obama’s first 100 days finished, the Swine Flu epidemic virus erupted across the nation. People who got this virus were the talk to the town. People went crazy with hygiene, washing hands, covering mouths, wearing masks, and even staying at home with fear. Swine Flu caused the greatest health paranoia of 2009.

June 25, 2009 was the day the whole word went silent. The loss of legend Michael Jackson caused the biggest grief in pop history. Paramedics found him unconscious at his Bel-Air mansion. He rushed to the hospital and soon pronounced dead.  Millions of mourning fans will not ever forget the fame and talent of Michael Jackson.

How could we possibly forget Kanye’s shocking move at the Music Video Awards 2009! Taylor Swift won the award for the Best Music Video Female. As she was on stage accepting the award, Kanye jumped on stage, stole the microphone from her and announced, “I’ll let you finish Taylor but, Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!” America was in shock, speechless, and thinking of all the horrible names to label Kanye. It made the top headlines, tabloids, and talk shows. There was not one person who hadn’t heard of this incident.

And finally, to top off 2009, we have Tiger’s tumble. Well renowned golf player, Tiger Woods, was caught having an affair with several women. Tiger, 33, was married with two kids while having an affair with allegedly nine women. “Tiger Woods affair” was the top searched topic on the internet.

We can all agree that 2009 had its best and worse days. 2009 was the year which America made history in politics with Barack Obama, as well as Michael Jackson, and in pop culture. There were many highlighted stories which made people say, “Did that really happen?” We can only hope that 2010 will be as interesting as 2009.
