On October 2, 2009 The hand of Genius exhibit came to the High Museum in downtown Atlanta. It displayed nearly fifty pieces of artwork; however, only about 25 of those pieces are actually from Da Vinci. The Remaining pieces were from students and fellow artists from his time period.
Last weekend I went to see the exhibit with high hopes. When I arrived at the museum all was well, and the eighteen dollar ticket seemed fair enough to witness something spectacular. Later I was very disappointed when I found out the tickets were over-priced and the exhibit was below my personal expectations. To start, you are stuck in a small elevator overflowing with eager occupants all pushing and shoving to get to the front. When you exit the elevator you enter a medium sized room with a projector playing a short introduction the upcoming exhibit. It was a fairly interesting slideshow except for the fact that they had a copy of the text playing backwards, as if to attempt to Da Vinci’s famous writing style. Unfortunately, this proved to do more harm than good. It was distracting and made it hard to understand the information.
After leaving that room you enter another area that has a few of his ink sketches hanging on the walls, one relief, and four sculptures. There was only one glass case protecting one of Da Vinci’s scale models of his bronze horse for the Duke of Sforza. The Duke asked Da Vinci to create the largest horse statue of all time, unfortunately Da Vinci died before he could finish.
All in All I did not find the exhibit to be exciting nor satisfying. The Hand of Genius is going to be at the High until February 21, so if you are interested in seeing a few sketches you should go, otherwise try spending your time at another one of Atlanta’s amazing attractions. With all of the renowned works from Da Vinci, one would be expected to see more of a variety of inventory.
