The Super Bowl: a time for family, friends, football, and of course, the commercials. From the favorite Clydesdale horses to Pepsi’s “What is Love” head bobbing commercial, Super Bowl Commercials continue to keep us laughing every year. This is perhaps the only time of year when the fast-forward button will not be used. But what does it take for companies to buy commercial time during the Super Bowl?
The cost of a thirty second slot of commercial time during this annual football game may astound you. A thirty second slot cost about forty-thousand dollars… forty years ago. Today a company will pay over three million dollars to air a commercial during the big game. CBS is certainly not complaining. Last year’s Super Bowl brought in $213 million and 98.7 million viewers. The earnings of this year have not been released yet, but the estimated amount is about the same as last year. The economic situation America is in has taken a slight dip out of cost compared to previous years, but these advertisements are still the most expensive.
I believe it is safe to say that the 2010 Super Bowl commercials were somewhat of a letdown. After learning how much money companies pay to air their commercial, you would think they would make their commercial a little bit funnier. Most years I never stray away from the television during commercials because I don’t want to miss any.
This year, there were only two or three that made me laugh out loud. Of all companies, Doritos certainly did not let up their game. According to NFL Fanhouse, three Doritos commercials were voted in the top ten. TruTV got creative with their Punxsutawney Palomalu commercial for six more weeks of football. Betty White also made an appearance playing football for Snickers. Of course the talking E-Trade babies played their part in the Super Bowl commercials as well.
A few companies made their mark as the worst Super Bowl commercials. Personally, I heard one too many squawking chickens from Denny’s for my taste. Making its mark as the strangest commercial was the Emerald Nuts and Pop Secret commercial. Mermaids? I do not understand how these companies could just toss that large sum of money out the window for these horrible commercials.
The Super Bowl is regarded as the biggest marketing event of the year. CBS may have reeled in the money, but they did not succeed in keeping us laughing. Maybe next year companies will step up their game and get into the true spirit of Super Bowl commercials. Check out http://superbowlads.fanhouse.com/ to view all of Super Bowl XLIV’s commercials.

Agreed, Miss Kelly. The Superbowl commercials this year were pathetic, along with the halftime show. Who is .. The Who? I had no idea who they were until they started singing the C.S.I. theme song. Thank you Justin Timberlake & Janet Jackson, because of you every halftime show after 2004 has involved nursing home residents. The only commercial that made me laugh was “Keep your hands off my mama, keep your hands off my Doritos”. Props to Frito Lay for being the only company who actually got their money’s worth.
Well said, Jordan, and i totally agree with you.
Who is the Who?!?!?! The superbowl halftime show is not made to cater for the youth. The majority of the people watching the superbowl grew up listening to bands like The Who. Personally I thought that the halftime show was incredible. The light show mixed with the music was mindblowing.
As for the commercials, I think that everyone can agree that they were terrible. The Doritos commercial was funny but my favorite was watching Betty White getting trucked.
